Bowling Green Junior High School held the District Governor’s Academic Team tournament with 15 students who take an interest in competitions. 8th-grade science and math teacher Mrs. Staggs took the responsibility of leading the team of 15 to the tournament. Kollin Hsieh 6th grade, Stockton Beasley-Brown 7th grade, Mallory Quinn 7th grade, and Ariti Gani 8th grade were some of the students that qualified for the tournament.
Kollin wanted to be a part of this tournament because he always wanted to compete against other schools. He started this event when he was in 4th grade. Stockton is a 7th grader who wanted to be a part of the tournament.
“Because it gives me a chance to expose what I know,” Stockton said.
Mallory Quinn was already in these events since 4th grade like Kollin, but Ariti wanted to be apart of this big tournament so she can show everyone what she can do. She is an 8th-grade student at BGJHS who won 1st place in the science testing part of the tournament. The 7th & 8th-grade had their first tournament this Saturday.
Staggs and her team hosted the Academic tournament on Jan 18, 2020. Staggs has been coaching BGJHS Academic Team for over three years now going into her 4th year. She helps the Academic team members practice every week for 3 days, which includes Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for the rest of the school year.
This is how the tournament worked: there are 6 events with 15 students who can do two events with a partner, group, or in a team. The students go into a private room were that subject is assigned. One room was for social studies while the others were for math and other content subjects. Once the students finished their test, the judges scored them. At the end of the tournament a ceremony was conducted where the winners were announced. Those who scored the highest go to state finals.
